John Lewis's Legendary Christmas Ad

Another year, another several million-pound spent on the John Lewis and Partners Christmas advert. The British giant has been creating highly anticipated Christmas adverts for years now, using festive and heart-warming narratives to pull at our heart strings and make us fall in love with JLP brand.

This year’s campaign ‘The Boy and The Piano’ focuses on Elton John; his life and his relationship with his Piano. The ad is set to the music of his hit “Your Song”, and follows John backwards through his life and memories all the way to receiving his Piano as a young boy at Christmas.

The tribute includes clips from some of his biggest, life changing performances like Band Aid, and takes us through a very nostalgic range of decades. But Elton John shares the spotlight within the campaign with the other star- his costumes. His undeniably iconic looks are featured throughout the clips such as his glittered and studded suits, baseball caps and crazy pink Mohican. The looks that inspired an entire Gucci collection for S/S18.

John Lewis are allowing this campaign to be as experiential as ever- allowing customers to physically go into the sets of the ad which will be inside of the London Flagship store on Oxford Street.

Elton said about this campaign “It was important for me that the advert was close to my actual memories and experience, so it had that emotional impact. And yes, The piano has always been a part of my life.”

Environmental Audit Committee Calls on Largest Fashion Retailers

Arguably the largest fashion retailers of today; Asos, Amazon, Pretty Little Thing and Boohoo, have all been called on to attend the Environmental Audit Committee. They are required to provide evidence to the House of Commons regarding life cycle of garments, quality of product, staff wages and any business plans in place to reduce environmental impact.

This is in response to evidence submitted to the Committee suggesting that fashion retailers’ buying operations are forcing British manufacturers to a point that is lessening the quality of work conditions and lessening wages.

This brings up a wide range of ethical issues including the social and environmental impact of fast fashion in Britain. But it is hardly unexpected as the likes of Pretty Little Thing and Boohoo are selling full garments for £5 or less in order to increase their competitiveness.

Business models of many brands are being questioned and investigated due to the current environmental climate. The environment is a hot topic, with a lot of emphasis being put on the disturbing impact the consumer society is having on the world. A recent report by scientists has warned of worrying levels of global warming and rising global temperatures.

Beyonce Buys Philip Greene Out Of Ivy Park

Beyoncé has bought Philip Greene out of her activewear brand Ivy Park. The American singer/ superstar shared the brand with Greene, allowing the brand to be stocked in Topshop stores worldwide since 2016.

The brand has claimed discussions have been underway for “almost a year”. However, this comes at an unfortunate time for Greene who has recently been in court over allegations of sexual and racial harassment in the workplace.

Sir Philip Greene, a massively successful and influential business man, was brought up in parliament in October of this year due to the attempt to take legal action to cover up the allegations against him. While he denied any wrong doing, the hit has already been taken for Greene and produced bad publicity for him and therefore his Arcadia brands.

Greene put the allegations down to merely “banter”, however the event has spread rumours and claims that this is the beginning of Fashions own “MeToo” movement.
