Gucci Sweater Resembles Blackface
In a world thought to be getting more progressive and inclusive, why does the fashion keep seeing such ignorance?
This week luxury retailer Gucci put this turtleneck sweater on their online shop; the sweater can be rolled over the face to resemble a balaclava, only revealing the lips and eyes. The jumper, costing £686, was tweeted alongside the caption “Balaclava knit top by Gucci. Happy Black History Month y’all,” and within minutes sparked hundreds of comments and became viral.
In 3 days this tweet had over 8,000 retweets, causing the brand to take the sweater out of stores and off the online site.
Gucci then released a statement:
“Gucci deeply apologises for the offence caused by the wool balaclava jumper. We can confirm that the item has been immediately removed from our online store and all physical stores. We consider diversity to be a fundamental value to be fully upheld, respected, and at the forefront of every decision we make. We are fully committed to increasing diversity through our organisation and turning this incident into a powerful learning moment for the Gucci team and beyond.”
From comments on transgender models from Victoria’s Secret’s Ed Razek, Prada’s ‘monkey key chains’ resembling blackface in December, the skin-darkening make up used in the January couture Balmain show; to this Gucci monumental incident. Will fashion ever learn?

Cardi B is Harper’s Bazaar March 2019 Cover Woman
What do you do when Vogue’s cover stars are the newly-wed Biebers? You do a fairy-tale inspired shoot with Cardi B, complete with Vera Wang and Balenciaga gowns.
This issue of Harper’s Bazaar sees the bright and loud Cardi B speak openly and honestly about fame, her career and her private life. The shoot perfectly fitting her own story, she says: “I feel like my life is a fairy tale and I’m a princess—rags to riches, people trying to sabotage”.
In the interview she also speaks of her rocky relationship with now ex-husband Offset, and possibilities of a reconciliation. The most note-worthy and gossip inducing feature about this article though is the image of Cardi in a red Vera Wang gown, wearing only one shoe. Fans will note this is a reference to her infamous throwing of a shoe at Nicki Minaj at the Harper’s Bazaar NYFW party last September.
