New York Fashion Week: AW19/20 Highlights

This fashion week season has seen some of our most venerated designers’ collections alongside some newer names embracing the essence of New York. Here’s a roundup of 5 of our favourite collections from the most ubiquitous names to some lesser-known up and coming brands.

1. Marc Jacobs

Set within the Park Avenue Armoury and dubbed as a ‘haunting lament’, Marc Jacobs’ collection presented an array of over-sized coats and exuberant gowns. Feelings of femininity were exhorted through dainty florals, its feather clad dresses and feather adorned hats by British milliner Stephen Jones. The collection imbued both sophistication as well as bright and minimalistic shapes.

2. Tom Ford

A collection that had its models cascade down a pink carpeted catwalk, it was a ‘timely tribute to tailoring’, inclusive of faux-furs, sharp tailored suiting and opulent leathers. Ford played with extreme contrasts of texture and colour, with large hats paired with open-blouses over matte polo necks, satin trousers and velvet jackets. The menswear looks also stayed true to Ford’s ubiquitous tailoring but presented classic pinstripes and full-leather suiting, synonymous of Keanu Reeves’s leather look within the Matrix.

3. Anna Sui

Christened as the “poptimism” collection, it presented an array of saturated secondary colours of the early 60's and bright wigs to match. The lines included ‘strange granny-dress mash-ups of knits and silks; resplendent faux-fur coats’ (Vogue, 2019) and an acid green feather-trimmed brocade suit. Think colour, think wackiness and think bold patterns.

4. Nanushka

A relatively unheard of brand within the luxury sphere, Nanushka’s ready-to-wear AW19 collection imbues a 70's neutrality with a general feeling of minimalism and classic elegance through use of muted colour palettes and pops of colour.

5. Tomo Koizumi

A surprising highlight for many, Tomo Koizumi’s debut collection was solely an assortment of dresses and skirts that were ‘densely packed assortments of polyester ruffles…like an otherworldly fairy tale’ (WDD, 2019). The pieces all unique to one another included cloud-like ombré ruffles in a rainbow of contrasting colours, perhaps unwearable on the streets of New York but nevertheless an eye-catching start to a burgeoning future for Koizumi.
